We all have moments in our life that we can recall exactly where we were and what we were doing when a specific event occurred. For some of you it may have been the invention of the wheel…and for others it may be the release of the 5th generation iPhone. Now I will admit that my memory is not as good as it used to be, however there are still a handful of moments that I can replay in my mind as if they had happened this morning. I can remember exactly where I was when the Challenger exploded just after takeoff. I can remember the intersection we were driving through when the radio station broke in with the news of Conway Twitty’s death (don’t know why this one stuck other than it made Mom cry). All of us will remember the horrific events of 9/11 and exactly where we were when that second plane hit the tower. For me, November 20, 2012, will forever be etched into my mind (and backed up on my iPad just in case) as the day that Dream On 3 became more than just a good idea.
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few…Go!” (Luke 10:2-3).
I refer to this moment as my Jerry Maguire moment. Everything stopped in that moment, and for the first time in a very long time…God got my attention. I remember calling my best friend and love of my life as soon as I got in my car and saying “Lizzie, we need to remember this day” and we began fumbling through pieces of what has now become the vision and mission of this organization. Then the fun began! See, I’m a sales guy. I’m used to coming up with an idea and selling it to everyone else. This time things were different! In every conversation I had and every meeting that took place, He showed me that this had nothing to do with me and everything to do with Him. Support has been pouring in already! People have been eager to sacrifice time, money, and their skills to make DO3 happen. The crazy part is…all of this is happening and I haven’t even had a chance to give my sales pitch yet! I learned quickly that my role was not to sell this…it was simply to “Go!”
The success of Dream On 3 is largely dependent upon our ability to let others know “who we are” and “what we do.” I have had the opportunity to do this many times and am extremely grateful for those who have given me that chance. Right after we decided to move forward with DO3, a good friend of mine wanted to interview me about our organization before a large group of people.
I will not bore you with the details, but it was an absolute train wreck! So what was this very difficult question that had me canvassing the room for a small hole to crawl into? It was one word…..”WHY?”
It had never crossed my mind that I may not know how to answer the question “Why?” I could talk all day about the “what” and the “how,” but I had never actually verbalized the “why”. After the embarrassment wore off, I realized that this question was going to require some thought as I would probably face it again. And I have! So here goes my best effort in addressing the most important question about the creation and existence of Dream On 3…. Why?
1) We Answered the Call. Isn’t caller ID a great thing? We can choose to answer that call from our best friend and ignore the one from the telemarketer. We can choose to talk to our spouse and ignore our boss, or vice versa! I believe that God has called each and every one of us to a specific purpose. We can choose to ignore it or we can choose to answer. I can’t tell you why and I can’t tell you how, but I can tell you that in November of 2012 I knew we were being called to start this organization… and this time we answered.
2) The Kids. Matthew 25:40 says “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” There’s no question that children with chronic illnesses, developmental disabilities, and life-altering conditions require special love. But more importantly than that, these children have special love that they want to share with the rest of the world. Dream On 3 is about inviting businesses, health organizations, the sports community, and individuals to “Huddle Up” and make dreams come true for disadvantaged children in our community. In return…they teach us how to deal with adversity and how to love!
3) Giving Back. A good friend of mine introduced me to the concept of“conscious capitalism.” The idea is simple and suggests that while making money is essential for businesses, it’s not the only purpose for existence. This is what Jerry Maquire was trying to address when he wrote his “mission statement.” The same concept can apply to our families and our homes. To a certain degree, money is essential for my household as well.
However, I wanted my girls to know that perfecting the art of “receiving” was not their purpose for existence. I can honestly say that our family has been truly blessed! I wanted my kids to know that we have not been blessed because of anything we’ve done or for our enjoyment alone. Our time and resources have a greater purpose in helping others and giving back.
4) Protecting the Dream. We all have seen the magic within a child’s dream. There are no limitations, qualifications, or reservations when it comes to a child’s dream. There’s a beautiful sparkle in their eye that as adults, we lost a long time ago. When Victoria came to me and said “Daddy, I want to be a princess when I grow up.” I didn’t tell her “Sorry baby…that’s not going to happen. You see, your mom is from Sanford and your Daddy is from Lyman. You may want to aim for Homecoming Queen.” I told her that she could absolutely be a princess and that she was one already to me. The unfortunate reality is that magic only lasts for a short time. As we become adults we become bruised, broken, and calloused by the harsh realities of this world.
Dream On 3’s mission is to protect the dreams of these special children… as long as we can!!
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45).
What is DO3 about? It’s about an opportunity to serve. To serve the growing number of children that are sick and suffering. To serve the families that pick up their crosses everyday and go to battle against these diseases and these hardships. To serve the communities in which we live and work. To serve our Father by getting out of the way, and allowing Him to do amazing things through us.
