One of our first Dream Kids, BJ, was originally diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on September 13, 2012. He had been playing football for Boger City Optimist Club in Denver, NC and his mother noticed that after practice and athletic conditioning training, BJ seemed to struggle much harder to recover than most of the other kids. His mother talked to coaches and teachers to find out what they were seeing and what may be going on. After several tests and blood work, the doctor informed Michelle and BJ that he was battling leukemia.
For the past 2 1/2 years he’s been a fighter and his active treatment end date was set for January 4, 2016. But on May 22, 2015, just 7 months from that magic date, the family learned the leukemia was back. BJ started a second round of treatment and underwent a 90 day stay in hospitals. He bravely went to Duke for a intense clinical trial. As his body waged war, he maintained a constant positive attitude and amazing faith. After several ups and downs, the doctors at Duke took him off the trial and he was brought back to stay at Levine Children’s Hospital to continue treatment. BJ continued to fight and pray, with his family and the community by his side. He has now returned home with the support of Kids Path, a form of hospice for children. We are so proud of BJ, his Mom, and sister Carly. They have shown us that relentless faith and prayer is powerful. BJ has the strength of 10,000 men and we are so thankful to have him and his family as part of our DO3 family as we continue to pray with them.
“God saves His toughest battles for His strongest solders.”
