Meet Davis a 9-year-old Charlotte boy living with Type 1 diabetes. Davis is a huge fan of his North Carolina teams, from mimicking Cam Newton’s dance moves to cheering on the Blue Devils!
After learning of his diagnosis, he was discharged from the hospital on a Friday night and was back on the baseball field the next morning. Davis’s Mom says he is a 9-year-old who is giving himself 4-6 shots a day, multiple blood checks, counting carbs, and learning about his self-care & whatever it takes to battle T1D!
This disease is more than a “month of awareness,” it is 365 days, 24/7 days. It never sleeps and never goes into remission. But Davis is learning to control his diabetes and will not let it control him!
-Davis’s Mom, Nancy.
When we met Davis, his love for all sports was obvious and he lives a very active lifestyle! Since his diagnosis, he says one of the hardest parts is figuring out how to keep his blood sugar balanced so that he can keep participating! Davis’s favorite subject is math, and he’s enjoyed being able to use his math skills to manage his diabetes. Remarkably, Davis has actually been empowered since his diagnosis! He has experiences some anxiety in a few areas, and his Mom was concerned over how he would cope with the diagnosis and new lifestyle. But Davis immediately stepped up to the plate and has been a rockstar in learning about T1D and how to manage it! He is currently the only kid in his school living with T1D, and he has brought awareness of the disease to many of his peers.
His Dream: With a natural love for sports, Davis is very competitive and loves competing with his older brother and peers. When it comes to North Carolina teams, he lives in a house divided. His brother and mom are both big fans of UNC, but Davis cheers for the Duke Blue Devils! Davis’s Grandpa went to Duke and he has been cheering for the Blue Devils for years. Davis’s dream was to attend a Duke Basketball game at Cameron Indoor Stadium!
Another Dream come true!
On March 1st, the students and staff at Sharon Elementary School huddled up with us to give Dream Kid Davis a surprise sendoff! They gathered with signs and smiles to show him that despite being the only kid in his school with T1D, he is not alone. There we told him that his dream of seeing the Blue Devils play was coming true that night. We then brought him and his family to Durham for more surprises. Dream Sponsor Martin Marietta rolled out the red carpet for Davis and his family, inviting them to check out one of their giant rock quarries! Davis and his family had a blast seeing the mile wide quarry and even driving one of their dump trucks.
After touring the quarry, Davis and his family enjoyed a delicious dinner at Mellow Mushroom before the big game. Then they were off to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a dream come true. Davis and his family were court side as they watched the players warm up. They later cheered the Blue Devils on to an exciting win over Wake Forest! But the surprises didn’t stop there…
With the help of The Iron Dukes, Dream Kid Davis was able to meet the players, and even Coach K after the big game! Coach K spent a lot of time with Davis and his family, talking to Davis about basketball, living with T1D, and much more. It was a very special evening spent with Coach K and the players that Davis will never forget!
