One Legendary City, Two Iconic Teams, and Their Biggest Cheerleader
Morgan Dunn is a 19-year-old from Mint Hill, NC and was referred to us by Levine Children’s Hospital. Last fall she started her freshman year at West Virginia University with the hopes of pursuing a career in fashion and joining the cheerleading team. Her plans were put on hold after she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in the spring. This turned Morgan’s world upside down and she was concerned and unsure about her future. Despite those concerns, she has stayed steadfast and relied on her faith to help her conquer this disease and her fears. She completed her last treatment in early October and is now in remission with the hopes of returning to school this spring!
The first thing we noticed when we met Morgan is her beautiful spirit. She immediately passed out hugs to everyone! We learned that she loves fashion and wants to one day be an editor for Teen Vogue. Morgan also has a passion for sports, especially basketball. She inherited her love of basketball from her dad, Jerry, who also happens to be her favorite sports hero! Trust us, he qualifies. Jerry has a long history as a coach. When Morgan was younger he coached for Penn State and even led them to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.
With all that basketball in Morgan’s blood, you may be wondering about her favorite team. Most people root for just one team, right? Not Morgan! Her love of the game leaves her affection split between two teams, the New York Knicks and the Clevland Cavaliers. Did we mention that Morgan’s dad also coached for the Knicks? It’s true! Added to that is the fact that Morgan’s love of fashion makes NY her favorite city. The scales seem to be weighing on the side of the Knicks, but who are we to say? What we can tell you is that Morgan’s sports dream is “to watch her favorite teams play in her favorite city, New York” and we look forward to making her dream come true!
The Dream Experience
December 6, 2016: With every Dream Experience we try to tell our Dream Recipients as little as possible to keep everything a surprise, so we didn’t want to tell Morgan too much except that she needed to clear her schedule for a few days. Next thing she knows DO3 CEO Brandon Lindsey is showing up outside her house with a Bentley! Off she went to the Concord Airport with her mom and sister where the rest of the Dream Team and Morgan’s friends and family were waiting to see her off. Including her father, Jerry, who she thought was working! The more surprises we can make happen, the better and this VIP Send Off was no exception. After learning her Dream was going to come true over the next couple of days Morgan was off to New York City in a private plane thanks to Rob Barnhill of Barnhill Contracting Company!
With a short trip to NYC we had a lot that we wanted to do, so once we arrived it was go time! First up Tuesday night was a delicious dinner at one of the best steakhouses New York City has to offer, Benjamin Prime. Everything was wonderful from the food to the service, we couldn’t have asked for better hospitality! Next, we headed to Broadway where Morgan and her family got to see The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre. We truly had no worries after that!
Wednesday was game day, but we had a special treat for Morgan before we headed to Madison Square Garden that evening. She loves all things fashion and we were able to take her to Mignonne Gavigan’s office and show room. All of her jewelry is so beautiful that they’re more like works of art! It was a first for a Dream Experience and a special part of the trip for Morgan. The highlight of her trip was by far attending the New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game at MSG. From watching pre-game warmups courtside to meeting Carmelo Anthony, Morgan loved getting to watch her favorite teams play in her favorite city!
We ended the trip Thursday with one last stop, the taping of The View! Morgan got to sit in the front row and even got the opportunity to meet Whoopi Goldberg and Candace Cameron. More firsts for the Dream Team! It was a quick trip to the Big Apple packed with all of Morgan’s favorite things, from Broadway to basketball we covered it all!
