Meet Edwin, a heart recipient who dreamed of meeting NASCAR driver Joey Logano!
Edwin is a lively, kind, and smart 11 year old who suffered from cardiovascular disease. He started noticing he could not breathe well, began swelling, and could not play like a young boy should. After several surgeries to try to alleviate stress to the heart and lungs, his cardiologists determined in December of 2013 he was in need of a heart transplant. His wait on the transplant list was ONLY 23 days, and in January he received his new heart at Levine Children’s Hospital.
He is doing well, but takes 16 medications daily to help his new heart continue to adjust to it’s new little body. He is homebound for the remainder of the school year. He lives with his mom, dad, and two younger siblings, Maggie and Santos.

His Dream: Edwin’s sports dream was to attend a NASCAR race for the first time! Edwin’s magical day started with a police escort and limousine ride to Concord Regional Airport, where like a true NASCAR legend, he was flown into the infield of Charlotte Motor Speedway in a helicopter. After landing Edwin spent his day doing celebrity meet and greets and full access to all things NASCAR. This included meeting and spending time with his favorite driver, Joey Logano.
“Being able to watch the races from his hospital room and his home provided him comfort and hope during a very difficult time,” said Edwin’s Mom. At the beginning of the race, Joey and the Penske team even invited Edwin to help push the car on the track!
