Do you remember the iconic 1979 Coca Cola commercial starring “Mean Joe” Greene? Most of the attendees at the September 29th Charlotte Touchdown Club’s Speaker Series did! However, it’s safe to say, both Dream Kid Aubrey and Dream Kid Brandon are a bit too young to remember it. That didn’t stop them from having fun and enjoying the meet and greet with the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers player.
During the luncheon, Joe Greene spoke on many topics including the commercial, where he got the nickname “Mean Joe Greene,” and what it meant to play with the Steelers during his time on the team.
One of the most memorable moments from the luncheon was when one young boy stood up to ask “if you could give advice to a young middle linebacker, what would it be?” Greene said, “you should listen to your coaches and play the way they taught you. Playing defense is all about reaction, both learned and natural. If you remember that you’re not out there alone and know where your teammates are you’ll never have to think while on the field and can just react to the game.”
He finished by saying you have to be prepared to play hard and fast. We thought this was great advice about being on a team as well! When
you’re on a team you are never alone, it’s important to rely on others when you need help and remember that they are there to support you too.
Our Dream Kids loved being able to hear from one of the NFL’s greatest players. They also enjoyed the opportunity to get to know each other during lunch. Dream Kid Brandon insisted on sitting next to Dream Kid Aubrey so that he could talk to her and a new friendship was quickly formed!
Special thanks to Joe Greene and the Charlotte Touchdown Club for joining us in the huddle and giving our Dream Kids a great day!
