This month we had the opportunity to hear from legendary college football coach, Steve Spurrier! There were plenty Gamecock, Gator, and Blue Devil fans in the audience to listen to the “old ball coach” reminisce about his days as a coach. Spurrier has an incredible memory and can remember almost every detail about the games he was involved in. It was truly amazing to hear him recall little details about games that happened in the ’80s and ’90s!
Spurrier revealed the secret to his success at so many schools throughout his career. In 1989, he read a book about the 7 steps to achieve your goals and he implemented goal setting while coaching at Duke. An important part of achieving your goals is to visualize them happening and believe in yourself. That year, the Duke football team went on to win the ACC Championship. It remains the only conference championship won by Duke in the last 50 years. As he continued his coaching career at Florida and the University of South Carolina later he still used goal setting as a tactic to achieve success in his football programs. With his 6 SEC titles, 8 SEC Eastern Division titles, and 1 National Championship it’s clear to us that his plan worked!
Day Dreamer Gabby and her dad enjoyed listening to the stories Spurrier told, but the highlight of the day for Gabby was being able to go on stage and pick the winner of our raffle item. (Getting out of school early and eating dessert for lunch was a close second though!) After the luncheon, Gabby was able to get Spurrier’s autograph on the Florida Gators football she won from our table.
It was a wonderful afternoon and a great luncheon to end on for this years Charlotte Touchdown Speakers Series. Special thanks to Steve Spurrier and the Charlotte Touchdown Club for joining us in the huddle and giving our Dream Kid a great day!
