Meet Zachyus: Zachyus loves the game of basketball and the NBA team Miami Heat. When he grows up, he wants to be a basketball player in the NBA. He dreams of this because of his love for the game, but most importantly for the chance to give back to others and be a good role model, like that of Dwyane Wade. He is an amazing young man with a grown-up soul. Kindness and grace exude from Zachyus and his family. He so bravely faces and handles his condition on a daily basis.
His Dream: Monday, February 3, 2014, will be a day forever ingrained in Zachyus’s heart and mind. The morning started off as a normal morning for any 11 year old going to school. What Zachyus didn’t know was that he was going to be presented with the surprise of a lifetime from his family, friends, school faculty, staff members of Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital, and the Dream On 3 team. As he was escorted outside through the doors of his school, screams and cheers echoed all around. “Zachyus, Welcome to Your Dream Day”, was shouted by all and written across banners! A police escorted limousine pulled up, with a red carpet rolled out to meet him. Gifts and hugs were given as Zachyus stood in amazement with tear filled eyes. Zachyus, his mother, Tyesia, and the Dream On 3 team were driven to the airport for their departure flight to Miami.
Once they arrived in Miami, Zachyus’s sports dream came to fruition. He was led on a private tour through the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat, and was given a bag full of gifts from the team. He received the VIP treatment inside The Heat gift store, which was opened only to him. Next, he ventured court-side to witness the pre-game shoot-a-round. He was introduced to several of the Miami Heat players, had his personalized jersey and basketball signed, and picture taken with each of them. After shaking hands with some of the players, Zachyus said, “I am never washing this hand again!” He enjoyed ball game foods as he sat in lower level seats to watch the Miami Heat pull out a great victory over the Detroit Pistons. He danced to the music and cheered on his favorite team and players. After the game was over, we ventured back to the hotel, Zachyus dribbling one of his new basketballs along the way. He was filled with excitement and jubilation, not wanting the night to end. He truly had the time of his life and his SPORTS DREAM COME TRUE!!!
