Meet Kurt

18-year old Kurt Cherry is full of life and his personality fills the room as soon as he enters. Kurt lives with autism, a condition that impacts his behavior and his ability to communicate. Kurt’s autism isn’t the only challenge this Charlotte teen faces.

The word “family” has taken on a new meaning for Kurt. Neither his father or his mother have been in his life since he was a child. Thankfully, there was some other family to step in and help. Kurt’s cousin, Joe, is his care provider and the two have a relationship that seems more like brothers than cousins. In addition, Kurt has been embraced by the staff at DDR, Developmental Disabilities Resources, where he receives support to help him navigate life a little easier. The team at DDR have become more like family than resource providers and Kurt is thriving under the love and guidance of all those who have stepped up in his life.

Kurt’s condition does not come with physical limitations therefore, he loves to play sports and he is also a huge spectator and fan! And when it comes to statistics and sports facts, Kurt is the guy you want to talk to. Every play, game time, player and opponent is stored in his head like a walking, talking Google. Like most of us, he does have a favorite and it’s definitely college football. Roooooll Tide! That’s right, he is a big Alabama football fan and he will talk to you about his favorite team as long as you will listen. He never misses an opportunity to gear up when there’s a game on TV.

Kurt has never had the opportunity to experience any professional or collegiate sporting events, so his passion for sports has been developed solely from what he’s seen on TV and online. Alabama’s accomplishments (replayed continuously on YouTube) inspire Kurt and remind him to keep working towards his dreams. Kurt’s dream is to lead the Alabama Football team out of the tunnel and catch a pass from his favorite player, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa!
