Tate's Dream

Meet Tate

Meet Tate, a 10-year-old from Knoxville, TN! Tate is your typical boy – he loves basketball and football, playing Madden NFL, and collecting sports cards. As you can imagine, living in Knoxville, Tate is the biggest University of Tennessee fan! He loves cheering on the Vols in every sport and he even loves their mascot, Smokey.

Tate’s mom says that he fights to be just like every other 10-year-old boy despite having Syringomyelia, Intracranial Hypertension, and Tethered Cord Syndrome. Since May 2020, he’s had four brain surgeries, a spinal cord surgery, and is scheduled to have another surgery in December 2022. While his illnesses have significantly impacted his daily life, he doesn’t let that stop him. Tate battles through pain and fatigue to continue to do the activities he loves, like playing flag football. To say that he is resilient would be an understatement.

Tate is interested in everything related to sports – the athletes, the stats, watching the game. He would love to meet some of the UT athletes and experience a VIP Vols fan weekend.

The University of Tennessee Collegiate Dream Team is working hard to make Tate’s Dream come true!

Tate's Dream

One day after Tate’s 10th birthday, he attended the fifth ranked Vols football practice and got a behind the scenes tour of Tennessee Football! The team was incredibly welcoming and even included Tate in their huddle at the end of practice. Two highlights for Tate were getting to talk one on one with wide receivers, Jalin Hyatt, who gave him a pair of signed gloves and playing catch with wide receiver, Michael Bittner.

On Friday, Tate enjoyed a surprise sendoff at school that included the Tennessee Cheerleading team and Smokey himself. After one awesome sendoff, Tate and his family enjoyed a shopping spree at VolShop followed by a private tour of the stadium and locker room. Tate was gifted a custom jersey and an autographed photo of Smokey! On Friday night, Tennessee Volleyball gave Tate a special welcome in-game and gifted him an autographed volleyball.

On Saturday, Tate got a front row seat for the Vol Walk and got to walk into Neyland Stadium behind the players. He even got to stay on the sidelines during warmups. So many of the players remembered Tate from practice on Thursday and stopped by to say hi to him. Then it was up to the Skybox to watch the Volunteers get a Senior Day win! On top of an already incredible day, Tate met Peyton Manning and got his autograph!

Way to go, University of Tennessee Collegiate Dream Team!
