Meet Amelia

Meet Amelia – a beautiful and vibrant 15-year-old living with Down syndrome. From the very start, Amelia has shown incredible strength and resilience. She was born with a heart condition and had to undergo AV canal surgery at just five months old. At age one, she spent three months in the hospital and required a feeding tube to eat. In addition, Amelia battled RSV as a baby. Despite it all, Amelia is now a happy and healthy teen!

Amelia is best described as a total diva—in the best way! She lights up every room she walks into with her sparkling personality. Her family affectionately calls her their “sour patch kid” because she might roll her eyes at you one moment and give you the biggest hug the next. She thrives in the spotlight and loves being the center of attention.

She enjoys dancing with Expand Movement, cheerleading with the Panthers, and spending time at Gigi’s Playhouse with her friends. She also loves coloring intricate mandala designs and embracing all things fun and social.

Amelia lives with her mom, Mary, in Charlotte and visits her dad in Greenville, NC often. Sadly, Mary is currently facing a terminal cancer diagnosis, so their time together is deeply treasured.

Amelia’s biggest Dream is to dance and cheer with the UNC Charlotte cheer team—an experience that would mean the world to her and her family.

Amelia's Dream

The weekend kicked off with excitement as the UNCC Collegiate Dream Team arrived at Amelia’s home to surprise her and officially begin her Dream Experience. Her face lit up when she saw the team, and everyone headed straight to Tequilas in Charlotte for a joyful lunch filled with conversation and anticipation.

Afterward, the group went to campus for arts and crafts, where Amelia received custom coloring sheets featuring all her favorite things. A stop at the campus bookstore followed for a Dream-worthy shopping spree stocked with plenty of UNCC gear.

Next, the team headed to Levine Hall for cupcake decorating while another crew raced ahead to Great Wolf Lodge to transform Amelia’s room. Her space was covered in posters, all-things-pink, UNCC touches, and Dream On 3 merch—an incredible setup thanks to Kyle and his team at Great Wolf Lodge. Amelia’s excitement was undeniable when she walked in.

She relaxed in her decorated room before dinner at Lodge Wood Fire Grill, where she ordered her favorite—chicken alfredo. With a full and unforgettable first day behind them, everyone settled in for rest before a big Day 2.

The next morning began at Build-A-Bear, where Amelia and her mom created keepsake bears. After breakfast at Great Wolf Lodge, the group enjoyed a fun-filled morning in the water park, playing in the wave pool and diving for toys alongside the CDT.

Lunch was provided by Chick-fil-A—one of Amelia’s favorites. Thank you to Matt Rice and Chick-fil-A Carolina Mall for making it possible. The afternoon continued with bowling, gem mining, and arcade games before everyone took a quick rest ahead of the evening’s events.

At Halton Arena, Amelia met the UNCC Cheerleaders and watched them warm up—lighting up at the stunts, back tucks, and high-energy atmosphere. Thank you to UNCC Cheerleading and Coach Vetter for the warm welcome. She then enjoyed front-row seats for UNCC vs. Auburn, sitting right behind the cheerleaders and even appearing on the jumbotron. The night wrapped up with a pizza dinner back at Great Wolf Lodge.

Amelia started the final morning with a MagiQuest adventure before enjoying one last breakfast with the team. Hugs and goodbyes followed as the weekend came to a close.

She ended her Dream Weekend in true VIP fashion—departing in a beautiful pink limo. Thank you to Lenora at Johnny B’s Limousine for the unforgettable send-off. The family headed home with full hearts and memories that will last a lifetime.
