Brandon's Dream

Meet Brandon

Brandon Simmons is an 18-year-old powerhouse of resilience and heart. A standout athlete at Union Grove High School, his world revolved around basketball, family, and big dreams — until everything changed in an instant.

While driving his younger brother, Justin home one night, their car flipped into a ditch. Brandon’s next memory is of flashing lights and ambulances. His first thought: Is my brother okay? Thankfully, Justin was. But Brandon had suffered life-threatening injuries.

He was airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where doctors gave him just a 1% chance of survival. He was placed on five different ventilators, an oscillator, battled severe pneumonia, and underwent repeated, life-saving interventions. For over a month in the ICU, his parents clung to faith while Brandon fought to stay alive. His mom recalls that even when he couldn’t speak, a single tear would fall from his eye — a sign he was still with them.

On December 21, Brandon transferred to the Shepherd Center to begin his next chapter. He’s made incredible progress, regaining movement on his right side and slowly building strength on his left. The moment his halo brace was removed, Shepherd brought him straight into the gym to shoot a basketball — and his smile said it all. His goal is clear: he will play ball again.

Brandon’s passion for the game hasn’t wavered. His ultimate Dream? To sit courtside at a Minnesota Timberwolves game, meet his favorite players — Anthony “Ant-Man” Edwards and Rob Dillingham — and have them sign his jersey.

Brandon’s story is one of grit, faith, and unstoppable determination. Against all odds, he continues to fight — and inspire everyone who meets him.

Brandon's Dream

Brandon’s Dream on 3 experience was nothing short of unforgettable from the very first moment.

The day began with an incredible surprise send off outside Brandon’s home. Although Brandon knew his dream trip was happening, he thought he was simply being picked up in a minivan. Instead, he stepped outside to a crowd of supporters including his family, Dream on 3 Georgia council members, Southeast Culvert (who sponsored his dream), the team from Strack, Dream alumni Layla Kendall, and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office led by Sheriff Scandrett. Card My Yard created a celebratory yard display, and Curtis from Elite Feet Customs gifted Brandon a custom pair of Timberwolves sneakers.

Then came the moment no one will forget.

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal knocked on Brandon’s door alongside Sheriff Scandrett to personally tell him that his dream was coming true that very day. Shaq shared words of encouragement and told Brandon he loved him and to never give up. In response, Brandon showed them something incredible. After his life changing accident, he can now take a few steps. The emotional moment left the entire crowd in tears, including Shaq himself.

After photos, prayer, and the Dream on 3 Huddle where Brandon broke down the team, the family climbed into a limousine and received a full police escort from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office to the airport. At the gate, Delta Airlines surprised Brandon with a special announcement that brought the entire terminal to its feet in applause.

When Brandon and his family arrived in Minneapolis, the excitement continued with a Timberwolves shopping spree at Target Center followed by a stay at the beautiful Marquette Hotel overlooking the city.

The next morning brought one of the biggest highlights of the entire dream: watching the Minnesota Timberwolves practice at the Mayo Clinic Square training facility. Brandon toured the state of the art facility, including the practice courts, recovery areas, underwater treadmills, and training rooms.

The Timberwolves community team surprised Brandon with an Anthony Edwards jersey personalized with his name and a pair of Anthony Edwards signature shoes. When Brandon tried them on, he smiled and said, “I feel like I can move again.”

Soon after, the assistant coach invited Brandon into the team huddle where he was introduced to the entire roster. Anthony Edwards spent time talking with Brandon and his family, learning about where he was from and the journey he has been on. Brandon later stepped onto the court with his brother Justin and his dad and stood up to make a basket.

That night, Brandon and Justin were given courtside seats to watch the Timberwolves game while the rest of the family cheered from nearby. After the game, the family waited in the locker room tunnel where players stopped to greet Brandon.

Then Anthony Edwards came around the corner.

Just as he promised earlier that day, Anthony walked straight up to Brandon and handed him his game worn jersey, still soaked from the game, along with the shoes right off his feet. When Brandon struggled to remove the shoes he had been gifted earlier, Anthony bent down, helped him take them off, signed them, and helped him put them back on before giving Brandon a hug and telling him how proud he was.

The night ended with the family returning to the hotel in awe, as the Timberwolves had already shared Brandon’s story on social media and Anthony Edwards reposted it as well.

But perhaps the most meaningful moment came after the dream was over.

Brandon’s parents shared that since the accident, Brandon’s brother Justin had quietly carried guilt from being in the car that night, and their relationship had changed. During this dream weekend, something beautiful happened. The two boys laughed, bonded, and felt like best friends again.

Brandon left Minnesota with unforgettable memories, renewed motivation, and a promise to keep pushing forward in his recovery.

Sometimes a dream is about more than the experience itself.

Sometimes it helps someone believe again.

And for Brandon, that belief is only just beginning.
