To know 12-year-old Joey is to be inspired by his strength, kindness, and joyful spirit. Affectionately known as “tiny but mighty,” Joey lives up to the name in every way. He has a huge heart, stands up for what’s right, and brings happiness to everyone around him. He’s a thoughtful listener, a loyal friend, and someone who makes others feel seen and valued.
A passionate sports fan, Joey lights up when talking about fantasy leagues, rattling off team stats, or naming the full rosters of his favorite teams. He loves playing sports-themed video games, watching games late into the night, and collecting jerseys. He also plays in a recreational baseball league, where he is happiest in the outfield and at second base.
Joey’s love for sports is even more remarkable given the challenges he’s faced. In 2014, he was diagnosed with fibromatosis 1, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow throughout the body and can lead to serious complications, including blindness, bone abnormalities, cancer, and more. In 2016, he bravely underwent 16 months of chemotherapy to treat an optic glioma and a tumor on his hypothalamus. In 2025, doctors discovered another brain tumor along with plexiform tumors in his neck and chest. Through every obstacle, Joey has shown extraordinary resilience, courage, and an unwavering spirit.
While he can’t always play sports the way he wishes, nothing keeps Joey from staying connected to the game he loves. He’s the Yankees’ biggest fan, cheering loud and proud, especially for his hero, Aaron Judge, whom he proudly calls a “legend.” Joey’s ultimate dream is to attend a Yankees game and meet Aaron Judge!
