Meet Sophie

Sophie is a kind, joyful, and spirited 13-year-old who lights up every space she enters. She loves dancing, singing, dressing up, and celebrating others—often all at the same time. She’s sweet, outgoing, and truly doesn’t have an unkind bone in her body. Sophie lives with Down syndrome and has overcome many early challenges, including open-heart surgery as a baby at Shands, the University of Florida’s teaching hospital. While learning and development take extra effort, Sophie works hard and continues to amaze those around her with her strength, determination, and heart.

Sophie attends a typical middle school where she’s embraced by classmates and teachers alike. Though she may be younger in maturity, she is wise in spirit—always encouraging others, lifting people up, and finding joy in the little things. Sophie doesn’t seek attention—she simply shines by being herself.

Sophie’s connection to the University of Florida runs deep. Her mom works at UF, and their family has given so much to the school and community—both professionally and personally. One of the most special ways Sophie contributes is by visiting campus with her mom to help teach students about medical-related topics by sharing her own experiences. She absolutely lights up on campus, feeling a strong sense of belonging and pride every time she’s there. Although Sophie hasn’t yet been involved in UF athletics, her biggest dream is to dance and cheer alongside the UF cheerleaders.

As a proud Gators fan, Sophie looks forward to the day she can celebrate everything she loves—music, movement, and community—through dancing and cheering with the team. It would be a shining moment where she could truly be herself and continue to inspire everyone around her.

Sophie's Dream

Day one of Sophie’s Gators Dream was nothing short of extraordinary. The celebration began at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine Large Animal Hospital, where Sophie’s mom works. Surrounded by the full team in a place that already holds so much meaning for her family, Sophie was surprised with her very own custom cheer outfit. The pride and excitement on her face in that moment set the tone for an unforgettable weekend.

From there, the team gathered for dinner at The Cheesecake Factory before heading to Dazzlers practice. Sophie and her sister, Felicity, jumped right into calisthenics alongside the team. The captains and even a few of the guys joined in, filling the room with laughter and making Sophie feel instantly included. The Dazzlers went above and beyond, gifting Sophie a stunning sequin dress, sweet treats, and spending time making bracelets together. They walked her onto the basketball court, took countless photos, and made sure she felt celebrated every step of the way. The hospitality and genuine care shown to Sophie and her family were truly unmatched.

Day two began bright and early with breakfast before heading to cheer practice on the indoor football field. Sophie was welcomed with her own cheer shirt and pom poms and immediately embraced as part of the team. The coaches and cheerleaders created a locker with her name on it and surprised her with a backpack filled with gear. One of the most special moments came when Sophie joined a full cheer formation, standing proud and confident in the middle of it all.

The day continued with a locker room tour at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and a personalized shopping spree at Alumni Hall, where Alex Tench and his team made Sophie and her family feel incredibly special. After a little rest at Hotel Eleo, the group enjoyed dinner at Chuy’s before heading to Exactech Arena for the game.

With front row seats behind the team chairs, Sophie cheered her heart out all night long. She was featured on the Jumbotron, heard her dream highlighted over the PA, and soaked in every second of the electric atmosphere. And just when we thought the night could not get any better, Sophie had the surprise of a lifetime, meeting Shaquille O’Neal and his daughter after the game.

By the time everyone returned to the hotel, they were exhausted in the very best way and overwhelmed with gratitude.

We started the final day with a slow morning followed by a trip to the pond outside the Reitz Union for a spa-style morning. Sophie relaxed with crafts, face masks, painted nails, and a little glitter — a calm, sweet time that let them simply be kids together.

Afterward, we spent time in the Student Union playing pool and Minecraft, adding a fun and easygoing energy to the day. It was a reminder that the simple moments matter most.

We returned to the hotel to rest, pack, and check out before an early dinner at Ford’s Garage where we had burgers all around to fuel up for the night ahead.

That evening, we headed to gymnastics practice, where Sophie was welcomed with so much love once again. We took team and coach photos, and Sophie watched warmups, practice, and the team run out of the Gator head. She stood down by the mats during introductions, taking in every moment up close. The cheerleaders made sure to greet her again, making her feel just as special as she had all weekend.

We stayed for the gymnastics meet, soaking in the final big moment of her dream. As the weekend came to a close and we said our goodbyes, Sophie left not just with photos and memories, but with a deeper sense of belonging and joy. Watching her confidence, excitement, and pure happiness throughout the weekend was something none of us will ever forget. Her spirit made this dream unforgettable — and being part of her Gators Dream was truly the gift.

Sophie’s Gators Dream was filled with inclusion, joy, and unforgettable moments that she and her family will carry with them forever.
