Meet Wailea

Meet Wailea! Wailea is an outgoing teenager with an ambitious spirit. When she grows up, Wailea strives to become an exotic pet vet – how cool! This 14-year-old lives with severe persistent asthma that influences many aspects of her day-to-day life.

Due to the severity of her asthma, Wailea is unable to play the sport of her dreams, basketball. Although advancements in the medications used to manage her condition have shown promise, strenuous physical activity still creates a burden on her lungs. This challenge has a negative impact on her mental health and leads to extreme frustration when she is unable to accomplish her goals.

Despite Wailea being unable able to take the court, she loves to watch and cheer on all of the local Carolina teams with her dad! They share a love for the game, and she credits all her basketball knowledge to him.

Wailea will be living out her ACC Basketball dream at the Women’s Tournament in Greensboro NC!

Wailea's Dream

The Dream Team knocked on Wailea’s door to surprise her with a DreamBox as well as to let her know that her Dream STARTS NOW! Wailea was so excited to learn that she would be heading to the Ally Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament in Greensboro, NC!

She and her family enjoyed a limo ride to Greensboro and had a blast the entire weekend. They enjoyed all the event had to offer including ACC Fan Fest, a welcome on the jumbotron, a behind the scenes tour, and seat upgrades!

On day one our friend and ACC reporter for ESPN, Kelsey Riggs, invited Wailea and her family down to the court to watch the post-game show and spend time with her colleagues. Wailea got autographs from all of the broadcasters and even got to meet Georgia Amoore, Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball guard. From this moment on she decided that she was a VT fan and was over the moon when the Hokies Women’s Basketball team won the tournament on Sunday!
